2 Riders in the Same Direction

When two kiteboarders are traveling in the same direction, the faster rider must give way to the slower rider in front. Why? By coming from behind, the faster rider has a better view of the situation, so he must defer to the other rider and change his course. Watch as the faster rider changes course

Other Beach Users

Right of way must be given to other ocean and beach users. Kiteboarders must travel downwind of them. Why? A regular ocean or beach user cannot react as quickly as a kiteboarder can, so be on the lookout for swimmers and others in the vicinity and ride around them. Additionally, staying downwind of regular beach users will help prevent injury to them in the event that you lose control of your kite (losing control upwind of swimmers could result in a dangerous collision, as you and your kite could wind up dragging them). Be aware of all others in the area

Two Kiters on Land at the Same Time

When two kiteboarders are on land at the same time, one kiter is preparing to enter in the water and the other one is ready to land, both proceed and keep clear from each other. In these situations there are actually no rule as both riders are in the same situation. Use your common sense and be kind  with other kiters to bring positive vibes on the spot!

Be Safe in Gusty Conditions

Gusts are sudden, strong blasts of wind. They can quickly turn a kite session into a nightmare and are a key factor in many accidents. It is recommended to always monitor the wind before you start your session to observe if the wind varies significantly;in this case you should avoid riding. Now if you decide to ride in gusty winds, remember to avoid keeping your kite at 12 o’clock as gusts will lift it or drop it. Avoid staying too long on the beach as accident are more harmful there than in the water and wind is probably gustier there too. Launch your kite towards the ocean and get in the water as soon as possible. Finally, use your common sense, go to the nearest IKO Affiliated Center and/or IKO Instructor to ask for advices about these special wind conditions and if you don’t feel comfortable with them, keep your session for another day.
